  Back from three weeks Senegal, Dakar. Lived a wild and dangerous life there. 'J'ai cartoner Dakar!' Loved it ! ;-). Recorded a lot of music there for the new CD of Mark Lotz & Omar Ka, A Fula's Call. This Cd will knock everybody out! Volkskrant described my performance with Lotz Of Music featuring Don Byron as 'the most impressive of the whole U-Jazz Festival and breathtaking beautifull'.   Some great new collaborations ahead: Finally I will work with a clarinet player again: acclaimed Don Byron from NYC! (15 december at the U-Jazz Festival) Trip to Senegal to prepare my project with Abou Thiam and Orchestre Du Fleuve. Also meetings with many musicians: a.o. Les Freres Guisse, Jacob Coulibaly, Papis N'Diaye, Shula. Doing some recording for the next album of Mark Lotz & Omar Ka, A Fula's Call. Also looking forward to some classes learning Flute du Peule! With my flute Collegues Aldo Baerten, Heiko Ter Schegt and Wilbert Hazelet I will organise a Flute Festival in march 20th, 21st 2013 at the Utrecht Conservatory. Have an eye on that one! With the merciful help of Allah a nice new Festival might pop up in Utrecht in 2013: With a celebration of music of the LopLop Records catalogue! A new review on our u-experimental CD by Cult Magazine (Montreal) Journey to Turkey in April working with laptop artist Korhan Erel and meet other improvisors. Preparing a new project with the name 'IstanPOOL'. A meeting of Turkish and Dutch musicians in a setting of two winds, two guitars and two laptops. Our CD u-ex(perimental) by Lotz/Kneer is featured at the Luisterpaal of Radio 6 and Tarans's Free Jazz hour. Have a listen! Our CD Lotz/Kneer CD is rated at CKUT's top 30! Not bad for free jazz ;-) Here a really hopeless review by Danny Blok at Jassepoes (Belgium). U can not win them al ... ;-) Here a fantastic review on Lotz Of Music's CD Bite! by Monsieur Delire (Canada). A great review on CD u-ex(perimental) by Herman te Loo at Jazzflits october edition (in Dutch). Also a review will be published in the next edition of Downbeat magazine. Excited.

  Despite the financial crisis 2012 is a fruitful year already with Tours and Gigs to Suriname, France and Africa. As well as two CD releases a lot of concert with new jazz and world ensembles, a film portrait and collaborations with some of the great masters in music. After our performance for the Dutch Queen with Mark Lotz Meets Omar Ka & ,A Fula‘s Call‘ we will release - if Allah is merciful - end 2012 our second CD . New tracks and setting with the ,rising star‘ from Dakar Cora player Bao Sissoko , piano-lion Jeroen van Vliet and Iranian percussionist Afra Mussawisade. Together with Timon Koomen I am curator of the U-Jazz Festival, 15 december 2012 in Utrecht, NL A new collaboration with vocalist Abou Thiam from Dakar. Project in Senegal with vocals in combination with Western and Indian flutes, Cora and Flute du Tambin. Eind december gigs in Senegal and Mauritania. Workshop with the 'Orchestre National du Sénégal‘. Recordings as solist on bansuri for the Mulitrack 15 of Winifried Baijens radioprogramma on Radio 6, NTR and the new CD of Georgian composer, guitarist and singer Konstantin Ruchadze and for Antillian vocalist Izaline Callister. I am one of the portraited artists in the filmdocumentary of Bernadette Beurten ,Improvising Hands And Minds‘ . With singer Omar Ka and percussionist Serigne M‘Gueye I performed for the Master Peace Organisation. Together with Stichting Doek , Lotz Of Music wil organize 2013 a Festival called ,IstanPOOL‘.   The second CD of mine the CD Lotz/Kneer, U-ex(perimental) is rated in the Top Ten/Best Of 2011. This time in the Dutch Jazzism by Marcel Kranendonk. (The other is Lotz/Islak Köpek at Mescalina, Italy) In November our CD Istanbul Improv Sessions reached rating #6 in the Top 10, Experimental at CJSW.   Our project Moldavia Calls had a nice continuation at the Ethnojazz Festival in Chisinau, Moldavia last week. We rehearsed and performed the Final 10'th anniversary concert as guest of Trigon, with as a special feature vocalist Jodi Gilbert. Also probably did my most funky trip thus far: a workshop to be held in the music college of Tiraspol in Transnistria! Which was also the nicest and rewarding thing to do to teach the students. Jodi and Paul Pallesen did great! Trigon released a CD around our project featuring three compositions of mine and two of Paul Pallesen.

  We have to inform you that - at least for now - our concert series: u-ex(perimental) will not continue. This is due to the temporary stop of the activities of the organisation 'Stichting Jazz in Utrecht'. We are shocked about what happened and would like to inform you about this: The SJU jazzpodium ('Stichting Jazz in Utrecht') was closed in June this year. The official decision to close the SJU club was taken by the government board of the SJU - with backup of the City Utrecht - because to a financial problem and distrust of the governement board in the artistic and financial directors of the SJU. All employes are fired. There is the intention to organize at least some (commercial more interesting) jazz concerts incidentally at location meanwhile, till the Muziekpaleis is opened. Enfin: A serious blow for progressive jazz and creative music in Utrecht. Of course we will fight! There is a society U Jazz set up by musicians, lovers of the SJU, former volunteers, conservatory Utrecht, etc with first the aim to reopen the SJU podium. They will take several actions, next to juristic also publicity actions etc. We would love to see you joining us in the fight.   The SJU Jazzpodium Utrecht('Stichting Jazz in Utrecht')is closed in June this year. A huge diseaster and bizar for a city applying for culutral capital of 2018. Next to the normal concert programme SJU was host of our u-ex(perimental) and World: Music: World Series concert series, had workshops, sessions, lap function and a great Festival. Looking back to it now it reveals itself as a coup of the governing board of the SJU (with the backup of the City of Utrecht) which all has to do with the plans to build a prestigious concert hall 'het Muziekpaleis' by the city Utrecht. Fortunately there are reactions. Have a look at Belangengroep U Jazz Looking ahead to my job as jazz flute professor at the Utrecht Conservatory. Leading two improv classes as well. Nice.

  New concerts in Turkey (with Islak Köpek), France (carte blanche in improv), Czech (K.Ruchadze), Moldavia (with Moldavia Calls) and Germany (with Startrunk) confirmed. Even got a concert in good ol' NL with my Lotz Of Music at the 'Sound of Europe' concert series, Breda. With A Fula's Call we'll rehearse and perform s'Hertogenbosch Jazz Festival in June with our new line up: Omar Ka - vocals, Bao Sissoko - cora, Jeroen van Vliet - keys, Afra Mussawisadeh - percussion and myself. Sounds great! Concerts ahead with Sandhya Sanjana, Iman Spaargaren and the Utrecht City Improv Collective. I have a job as flute professor at the Utrecht Conservatory now. I love it but it is unfortunantely due to the sudden death of my dear collegue Ellen Helmus. She passed away much to early. Life can be cruel sometimes. SJU

  Had really nice u-ex performances with Fay Victor(USA), Jasper Stadshouders, Jan Schellink and Juan Parra Cancino (Mexico). Did some gigs again with Haytham Safia's (Israel) Galilee Grooves. Performed a cozy private Indian Music concert with Raj Mohan and now doing a little Tour with Estrella Acosta's Guaijra performing Cuban Country Songs. Great reviews. Recorded a nice Demo for Gijs Batelaan and tracks for Eelco Topper and Rory Ronde/Jayanti Noömi. Performed a great Brazilian concert with 'Tributo a Paulinho do Violao' and enjoyed a marvelous gig as guest soloist with Rembrand Frerichs Kepera Trio and finally a duo/solo concert at Artcenter Sophies Place together with a Storyteller. Finished editing etc the CD's Mark Lotz Istanbul Improv Sessions May 4'th and 5'th and reviewing the u-ex(perimental) recordings I did with Meinrad Kneer and many others.   Almost finishing the Tour with Haytham Safia's 'Galilee Grooves'. Nice. Last concert we'll be performing with African Percussonist Osama. Had an really nice performance with Tony Overwater and Joshua Samso in an occupied house in The Hague. The concept of the concerts are funky and the spot was marvelous. We had a great time. Also the performance with prepared piano master Philip Zoubek and free wheelin' drummer Andrea Pichler really was fun to do. Good ol' school improv. In Istanbul I'll do recordings with a lot of musicians. No world music but the real stuff: free improv from a steamining urban metropole. Among others with Korhan Erel, Umut Caglar, Oguz Buyukberber. Looking forward to this After that exhausting 10 days I'll hang out in Ibiza with my family to rest and dive ;-)

  In May I'll be performing Istanbul again! With the Kamil Erdem Quartet (Turkey/Istanbul) and in the best Jazzclub of all Nardis with a new band the 'Sibel Köse-Mark Lotz Quintet'. Very excited about this. Then I'll have a free improv evening at the Gitar Cafe as well going to record with some improvised musicians and electronic musicians there. Last but not least doing a flute/improv workshop at the Istanbul University. With Moldavia Calls the Tours knows already future projects in Moldavia and Ukraine. Lots of activity around that ensemble now. Heading to Ibiza in May and June in Egypt performing the Art Beat Festival with A Fula's Call. Love this life ... .

My flute and alto flute had an overhaul by Yhsar Dagan during Christmas vacation. Incredible : feels like I got new ones.

The Global Villgae Orchestra has two new gigs in May featuring Tibetan soloist Namghyal Llhamo. Exited about this.

  Ariel Romero just informed me that our track Raga Colombiana of the Mark Lotz & Shango's Dance CD Cuban Fishes Make Good Dishes seems to be a big hit in Santiago de Cuba. Never thought of that ;-) Our CD Bite!still still is getting a lot of airplay in the Us. It made even the weekly top 10 at WEFT. .

  Back from vacation. A lot of stuff happened besides having a great time and studying a lot Bansuri at Texel beach ;-) I had performances abroad: - two performances at the July Jazz Festival at Smolyan, Bulgaria with A Fula's Call. (Including a truly funky open air performance at Mount Perelik. Beautifull!). - A small gig with Pierre Abbo at Cafe du Solleil, Toulouse featuring bass virtuoso Jacky Grandjean. - And Concertgebouw Amsterdam with Giovanca in a double concert with Lilian Vierra.   2010 will c a truly funky new project. A collaboration of A Fula's Call with the Euregion Brass, Wind & Percussion from the South of the Netherlands (there you find the best of the world!). This project will tour Africa (Senegal/Gambia) and the Dutch Lowlands.

  a lot of things happend and are to come: I found two new CD's in my post were I perform along. The CD Chera by Afghanian singer Wahid Bayar (pop), CD Free by the Ad Colen Quartet (jazz). CD box 'Jazz In Germany Edition' with the track 'Blues For Yemaya' from the Lotz Of Music In Havana album (won the German: Deutscher Schallplatten Preis 2009!). Lotz of concerts heading up with Ad Colen (jazz), A Fula's Call (African world music) (feat. a little Tour in Bulagria), Raj Mohan (Indian pop), Estrella Acosta (Cuban Country), Rosie Woof, (Imrov with dance), Giovanca (R&B), Michael Baird (jam), u-ex(perimental) , (free improv) as well as workshops on Improvisation I give. CD Bite still gets nice reviews (Germany and abroad - even Ukraine!) and a lot of airplay especially in the US and Australia. The A Dutch View On Fish project now performs with cello player Jörg Brinkmann. Truly exciting artist. We are very happy to have them within our Lotz Of Music. VPRO radio invited me for their radio broadcast 'De mening van ses'. Hope the listeners could follow my heavily German accented brabbles and blurbs ... .
